Rubber Chippings / Bark / Mulch

Recycled rubber chippings /bark / mulch are an excellent choice for safer surfacing in private gardens and commercial playgrounds alike.

These rubber chippings are made by recycling used vehicle tyres. They are then polyurethane sealed and coloured. This creates a high-quality coloured rubber chip that is safe, clean and hard-wearing. The rubber chippings are quick-drying and being permeable, there is no risk of puddling. This means more play time for your children!

Our long-lasting chippings last for many years. As a multi-use material, you can reuse them as a border mulch once the children have outgrown playing.
Rubber chippings have many benefits: don’t blow away easily, are colourful, don’t rot away or desintegrate, you don’t need much depth, dry quickly.
This product can be delivered in bulk bags or small 20kg bags. Deliveries are in pallets and can be quoted for anywhere in the UK.

HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED? / COVERAGE CALCULATIONS

We recommend a minimum of 20kg/m2 to achieve a 50mm layer. Always try to order a little bit more to take advantage of the delivery charge when you purchase 20kg bags.

For example, a 500kg bag covers 25m2 at 50mm deep. 400kg cover 20m2 at 50mm, 300kg cover 15m2 at 50mm.

When laid at 50mm deep, this gives a critical fall height of 1.1m.

When laid at 100mm deep, this gives a critical fall height of 2.7m.

All this calculated on concrete, as it is the worse case scenario. Laid onto a dynamic base, the CFH achieved will be higher.

FOR COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS, the minimum depth will be 150mm (calculated as 100mm more than the depth you require to meet your critical fall height, this is to allow for displacement of the surface. For example, if you need 50mm deep, for commercial applications you should order 150mm deep.

BENEFITS

Using rubber mulch should provide you with some impressive benefits:

  • No settlement compaction or rotting to allow for
  • Retains no moisture and does not stay wet
  • Does not blow around. Does not stick to children’s shoes, therefore is not taken inside with them!
  • Low maintenance (raking required)
  • Drop tested to BSEN1177 standards for playground use
  • Will not float or wash away
  • Helps to curb weeds, mould and fungus.
  • Lasts longer than wood bark.
  • Effective weed control
  • Does not absorb water and nutrients
  • Discourages slugs/snails
  • Resists freezing
  • Cost effective
  • Does not rot away.
  • Dries quickly
  • Non toxic
  •  Colours available at no extra cost, you can create your own mix!

Consider organic bark versus rubber bark. “Buy now, don’t pay later”

Ordinary bark only lasts 6-12 months. Normal bark also compacts, turns to mulch and so needs constant replacement and costs money to remove. Children will get dirty playing in it and they will bring the bark in to the house/school on the soles of their shoes.

Rubber chippings last for years, don’t compact, don’t rot, don’t blow away, dry quickly and don’t freeze.

Rubber bark and rubber chippings can provide a multi purpose, multi colour surface making outdoor learning and playground activities safer for children. All our products are tested and certified.

In general the depth for woodchip is a lot more than the rubber chippings to achieve the same critical fall height. The rubber chippings can be laid at 50mm deep offering protection of 1.1m when tested on concrete.

For the sake of the environment, no trees are sacrificed to make these products.
